Tea, tea everywhere and not a drop to drink. At least, not until tea time. JC Ulat works on a tea planation in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka. The 24-year-old is a student at Humber College in the International Development program. As part of his studies, he’s researching potential ecotourism in tea country through the Uniterra program. JC PHOTO Tourism is one of the fastest-growing industries in Sri Lanka. Nuwara Eliya is a stop on what is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful train rides in the world, with about 4-5,000 foreign tourists coming through its Victoria Park each year. Most days JC walks up the tea terraces to get to work in the middle of the Edinburgh estate, part of the Kelani Valley Plantation company. Other days he meets tourists by the train station to survey them about their travel plans and what they’d like to see in tea country. With his mandate coming to an end in the next few weeks, his research will leave Uniterra and its partner with information to use going forward to help women and youth in Nuwara Eliya. This Youth Day, WUSC Sri Lanka features some of it’s youngest volunteers doing great work across the country.
