The CECI in Rwanda first contributed to the country's reconstruction, following the genocide against the Tutsis in 1994, notably through the decentralization policy aimed at establishing an inclusive decentralized system of local governments nationwide.
Along with our partners, we develop programs that foster constructive dialogue with local authorities, stimulate financial education and the agricultural economy and strengthen food security for women and their communities. For more than 15 years, CECI-Rwanda has also supported women’s organizations in the Great Lakes region in advocating for their rights, in particular access to education for girls from displaced communities and protection against gender-based violence.

CECI-Rwanda champions the rights of women and girls through various initiatives. We prioritize capacity building for civil society organizations and the private sector, collaborating with the government on outreach endeavors. Our efforts aim to combat gender-based violence, building on the Violence Against Women (PLUVIF) project and enhance education access for women and girls from displaced communities. Additionally, we strive to improve the availability of quality socio-economic services.
CECI-Rwanda prioritizes enhancing women's economic autonomy by bolstering their entrepreneurial skills. This includes facilitating job creation for young women through technical and vocational training. Moreover, our Girls' Education for a Better Future Project in the Great Lakes Region (EDUFAM) empowers thousands of girls, adolescent girls and women. Additionally, we provide support to women-owned private companies involved in agriculture and agri-food value chains, facilitating their growth and access to profitable financial services and markets.
CECI-Rwanda collaborates with partners to promote environmental protection and climate change adaptation through nature-based solutions, prioritizing food security and green economy growth. Our efforts, especially through the Volunteer Cooperation Program (VCP), aim to empower women as agents of change, fostering community development. Additionally, we support waste management initiatives to mitigate environmental pollution.
CECI backs initiatives fostering peacebuilding, social cohesion and inclusive governance in Rwanda. Together with partners, we promote women and girls' leadership and effective participation in decision-making at various levels. Our support extends to the Rwanda Women’s Leaders Network, dedicated to nurturing the next generation of women leaders.
