CECI opened its doors in Mali in 1984, at the height of one of the country's most severe droughts. Today, the organization continues to support sustainable economic development in rural and peri-urban areas. We work primarily with communities affected by the conflict that has been raging since 2012. We also offer support to women's organizations in Malian civil society. CECI-Mali relies on a solid network of national partners and collaborates with various government departments.

CECI-Mali implements the Women's Voice and Leadership (WVL-Musoya) project, empowering Malian women and girls to exercise their rights and promote gender equality. Through this initiative, we bolster local women's rights organizations, enhancing their services, advocacy and institutional capacity. Additionally, our Resilient Girls and Education (FIÈRES) project focuses on ensuring education access for girls, teenagers, and women in Timbuktu, Mopti and San regions. Tailored to the socio-cultural context, this project aims to empower over 20,000 women by improving education access and creating conducive learning environments for increased participation in economic and social activities within their communities.
In terms of economic development, CECI-Mali prioritizes projects focused on job creation and entrepreneurship. Following the Support Agricultural Entrepreneurs (PAJEA) project, we partnered with the Ministère de l'Emploi et de la Formation professionnelle (MEFP) on the Skills Development and Youth Employment (PROCEJ) project, funded by the World Bank. Additionally, we collaborate closely with the Réseau national d'appui à la promotion de l'économie sociale et solidaire (RENAPESS) and are directing upcoming efforts towards promoting and developing women's entrepreneurship.
CECI-Mali plays a significant role in World Bank-funded projects supporting climate change adaptation, particularly in northern regions, through initiatives like the Support Program for Agricultural Services and Farmers' Organizations (PASAOP) and the Competitiveness and Agricultural Diversification Program (PCDA). As one of the Canadian partners, we're involved in implementing the Dou Touloma ("pillar of the family") project. Additionally, the RÉELS project expands our support in challenging contexts, with a focus on climate-resilient food security, emphasizing nature-based solutions.
Post-emergency human security is a key priority for CECI in Mali. Over the past decade, we've spearheaded a multi-sectoral project focusing on agriculture and food security, WASH and protection in the Timbuktu and Mopti regions. Funded by the Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA) and the Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), this initiative aims to rebuild productive capital, fostering resilience and development while promoting reconciliation and economic recovery within communities. Moving forward, we plan to align more closely with the humanitarian-development-peace nexus approach in our activities within the country's fragile contexts.
