Youth health in Mali: Last step before launching the Ki La Di pilot project

Mali

On September 21, the Yellen Project team met with representatives from the education system and the health sector in the Kayes region for a final validation before the deployment of the Ki La Di pilot project. The purpose of this meeting was to provide final validation of the digital platforms and the conditions of implementation of the project by the partners of its implementation.

Carried out with goodwill and supported by the collaboration of all parties, this meeting allowed to share the results of the surveys evaluating the level of knowledge of the students on the themes addressed by Ki La Di and to mobilize the stakeholders to define the intervention strategies in the targeted schools. With the involvement of everyone, respect for academic principles and humanistic values was taken into account at every level of the intervention.

This activity was the last milestone before the launch and reaffirmed the commitment of school representatives to support and accompany the Ki La Di pilot project throughout its implementation.

About the Ki La Di Pilot Project

Ki La Di, "to advise you" in Bambara, is an initiative developed by the Yellen Project team, which operates in the Kayes region of Mali. This pilot project will provide adolescents and youth in the Kayes region with awareness-raising content on reproductive health and rights through digital platforms. WhatsApp groups, a Facebook page, and an Android app will provide opportunities for youth-to-youth and expert interaction on issues related to sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender equality, and gender-based violence. Specifically designed to reach young people and address, among other things, the issues that accompany puberty, the Ki La Di project will be supported in four public high schools in the Kayes region through awareness activities and communication campaigns. The objective of the Ki La Di project is to prevent situations that may have harmful consequences on the physical or mental health of adolescents and to improve their knowledge of their rights in order to promote access to health services and the use of advocacy.

A few words about the Yellen project:

The Yellen project "Law and innovation in sexual and reproductive health in the Kayes region of Mali" is a bilateral cooperation project between the governments of Mali and Canada. It is implemented by a Canadian consortium consisting of the International Health Unit of the Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (USI - CHUM) and the Centre for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI).

This project aims to contribute to the transformation of unequal gender relations in sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of women and adolescent girls in seven health districts of the Kayes region (Bafoulabé, Diéma, Nioro, Oussoubidiagna, Sagabari, Séféto and Yélimané). It is based on the hypothesis that increasing the decision-making power of women and adolescent girls to better control their health will foster an increased demand for quality sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, including gender-based violence (GBV) and family planning (FP). The project proposes an innovative model of collaboration aimed at harmonizing the work of actors from health services, civil society, particularly women's groups, and decentralized communities. The Yellen project is supported by the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada.
