In Guatemala, where social and economic inequalities persist, financial education plays a crucial role in improving the living conditions of vulnerable populations, particularly women. That's why Guatemala CECI and ComuGuate are implementing a series of financial education workshops for women, enabling them to better manage their own finances and those of their families. The testimonies of three participating women highlight the transformations that this training can bring about, at both individual and community levels.
Before joining the workshops, Sonia Marisol had little knowledge of financial management and found it difficult to plan her spending. The financial education workshops were a turning point in her life. She learned how to draw up a budget and develop savings strategies, so that she could meet her health, education and home maintenance expenses. Today, she even has the knowledge she needs to start her own business. "What I've learned, I'll pass on to my family," she says.
Having benefited from training on budget planning and the importance of saving that has allowed her to acquire knowledge that benefits her community, Francisca Pequien has become an agent of change in her hometown of San Juan Sacatepéquez. "In our lives, we often say that we won't make it, but now I say that anything is possible, and I'm going to share that with my family and my community," she declares with conviction.
Gina Trujillo, a volunteer with CECI Guatemala, helped train dozens of young women to better manage their finances. She served as an advisor for the economic emancipation of women entrepreneurs and businesswomen during her nine-month mandate in Guatemala. "So here I am, with a desire to continue these workshops, because I know that even with this small gesture, I’m contributing to improving these women’s lives", she concludes.
The Impact of Financial Education in Guatemala: A Lasting Transformation
Financial education can have a profound and lasting impact in environments where access is difficult. By providing individuals with the skills they need to manage their finances, these initiatives foster not only economic empowerment, but also positive community dynamics and knowledge sharing. In Guatemala, every personal success becomes a catalyst for collective change, shaping a more prosperous future for all.
