After Hurricane Matthew hit in 2016, the AVETI project (Climate Adaptation and Economic Development of Agricultural Sectors in Haiti) was launched to strengthen the resilience of farmer-s to climate change. Initiated in March 2019, it has been implemented in six communes of Grand’Anse, Haiti: Beaumont, Moron, Chambellan, Dame-Marie, Anse-d’Hainault, and Abricots. It has directly impacted more than 6,000 producer-s and reached a total of over 35,000 people in the project’s intervention areas.
Facing droughts, prolonged rains, and extreme temperatures that threaten crops, the AVETI project has implemented adapted solutions:
To strengthen the cocoa and yam sectors, the AVETI project has supported seven agricultural cooperatives and several financial institutions, including the Grand’Anse Agricultural Credit Bureau. It has also provided assistance to 51 cooperative businesses, largely managed by women and youth, by granting 45.1 million gourdes in loans, as well as training and equipment to improve their production, particularly in cocoa processing.
Thanks to these efforts, farmer-s in Grand’Anse now have concrete tools to face climate challenges and ensure the sustainability of their crops.
