International Day of Education: building the future through knowledge

On the occasion of the International Day of Education, the international community is invited to reaffirm a fundamental principle: education is one of the most powerful levers for sustainable development, equality, and social cohesion. In a rapidly changing world marked by growing demographic, economic, and climate pressures, investing in education remains a structuring choice for the future of societies.

For many girls around the world, school represents much more than a place of learning: it is a space for empowerment, self-confidence, and envisioning the future. “Going to school means preparing for a better future, now and later, shaping my personality so I can support my parents, my community, and even my country,” says Fatoumata (pseudonym), a 13-year-old student who returned to school in the Mopti region of Mali thanks to the FIERES project, implemented by the Paul Gérin-Lajoie Foundation and CECI with funding from the Government of Canada. Her perspective reminds us that beyond statistics and public policies, education is lived every day, from a child’s point of view.

Yet despite the progress made over recent decades, not all indicators are positive. Persistent disparities continue to limit access to quality education for all, particularly for girls. Territorial, economic, and social inequalities still hinder the full realization of this fundamental right, calling for coordinated and sustainable responses.

Many countries face significant challenges in investing in their education systems to ensure that children can study in adequate conditions. Political instability and insecurity have too often negatively affected and disrupted education systems.
Across the globe, numerous countries in Africa, Asia, and South America—affected by conflict, economic or social crises, or climate and humanitarian emergencies—are now dependent on international support to sustain education systems that have been severely impacted.

For example, Mali continues to face persistent challenges. With technical and financial support from Canadian organizations and the Government of Canada, initiatives aim to strengthen national education systems.

At all times and in all places, education has been associated with the promotion of values such as tolerance, peace, solidarity, and living together. It acts as a catalyst and a unifying force among peoples.

As Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nelson Mandela once said: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
