The Women Engaged for Climate Resilience in Rwanda (FEREC) project supports climate change adaptation for women farmers and their communities in part of the Akagera watershed, specifically in the Kirehe District, Gahara Sector, Eastern Province—considered the most vulnerable area in the country. In a context marked by high climate variability, recurring extreme weather events (droughts and floods), intense deforestation, and erosion, the project promotes the adoption of regenerative climate-smart agriculture practices by members of farming organizations.

The project also strengthens the capacity of these organizations to build a green, low-carbon, and climate-resilient economy. It aims to generate results across research and innovation, agro-climatic action, green economy development, and women’s climate leadership.

Objectives

1 / 3

Increase the climate resilience of vulnerable women farmers and their communities in the Akagera watershed, Rwanda

Equip women farmers and their communities with theoretical and practical knowledge, as well as input support, to reduce their vulnerability to climate change.

Increase the adoption of innovative climate-smart regenerative agriculture solutions by members of farming organizations, especially women

Through local and empirical knowledge as well as technical innovations from research, women adopt agroecological practices that improve their resilience to climate change.

Improve the performance of farming organizations in building a climate-resilient green economy benefiting women

Farming organizations improve the sustainability of their services and enhance the profitability of agricultural value chains by integrating eco-friendly and low-carbon processes. Women members also take leadership in implementing mitigation and adaptation strategies.
