In Haiti’s South and Nippes departments, the Resilient Productive Territories (TPR) project supported farming communities severely affected by Hurricane Matthew and the COVID-19 pandemic. Implemented in 2020–2021, the project aimed to reduce food insecurity and strengthen the resilience of the most vulnerable families. During the extended lockdowns, farmers faced major losses and saw their harvests rot in transport trucks. The lack of market access pushed many to exploit their local forests for survival. This initiative helped restore agricultural activities, improve food availability, and strengthen local capacities while protecting natural resources.
The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted rural communities in Haiti, already weakened by Hurricane Matthew. Extended lockdowns led to the loss of entire harvests and disrupted access to markets, aggravating food insecurity. Without income, many farmers turned to cutting down trees to survive. The TPR project, funded by the World Bank, was implemented to mitigate these impacts and strengthen rural resilience. Through the provision of agricultural inputs and support for food production and local markets, this initiative enabled targeted communities to better face future sanitary and climate-related crises.
