The Technological Innovation Program for Agriculture and Agroforestry (PITAG) aimed to promote innovative, cost-effective and sustainable agricultural technologies while strengthening training in agriculture and rural development. The program’s research component funded applied research projects designed to address the needs of women and men farmers by developing solutions adapted to contemporary agricultural challenges.

Objectives: 
- Develop technical reference frameworks that contribute to the sustainable improvement of soil fertility and resilience while taking economic and social considerations into account, ultimately helping improve producers’ livelihoods.
- Develop approaches adapted to identified constraints, promoting sustainable agriculture with limited external inputs and suited to mixed cropping systems.

Soil Fertility Improvement

This theme focused on maintaining and restoring soil fertility in a predominantly manual farming context. The main agroecological and socioeconomic constraints included:

  • Limited agricultural equipment and mechanization.
  • Scarcity and high cost of synthetic fertilizers.
  • Climate change impacts, including droughts and flooding.

Identification and Integrated Management of Crop Diseases and Pests

Particular attention was given to:

  • Cereals, legumes, roots and tubers, bananas, fruits and vegetables, coffee and cocoa.
  • Production stages ranging from cultivation to post-harvest management.

The proposed solutions emphasized integrated management approaches without synthetic pesticides, or through the use of natural organic pesticides, in order to reduce environmental impacts while supporting healthy and viable agricultural production.
