A Life Guided by Commitment: Khady Diallo, Recipient of the Rosario Demers Award

Senegal

On International Volunteer Day, CECI highlights the inspiring stories of those who, through their commitment, help empower communities. This year, the Rosario Demers Prize, which honors volunteers who have made an outstanding contribution to a CECI project, was awarded to Khady Diallo. Her story illustrates the power of collaboration and the wealth of human experience that comes from volunteer involvement.

Khady Diallo's story resonates with the promise of commitment and resilience. With her contagious laughter and vibrant personality, she lights up every space she finds herself in. Yet, beyond this warm aura, Khady embodies an unwavering determination to make a difference, one step at a time.

A youth of values and promise

Born in Senegal, Khady grew up in a family that valued solidarity. Very early on, her parents introduced her to the scouting movement, forging in her a deep sensitivity to collective causes. After studying management at Paris-Dauphine University, she embarked on a career blending professional expertise and social engagement. What sets Khady apart is her ability to connect communities, build bridges across cultures and rally energies around transformative projects.

“Being a volunteer is a way of life,” she says, her eyes sparkling. In 2019, she joins CECI's Volunteer Cooperation Program (VCP), with a clear mission: to give back by using her skills to support organizations transforming lives.

Commitments that transform

During her time with CECI, Khady has been involved in a variety of initiatives, touching on issues such as women's economic empowerment and the fight against female genital mutilation. A key moment remains her encounter with young girls in Senegal trained in non-traditional trades, such as mechanics and automotive electricity.

“Seeing their courage and tenacity in overcoming immense obstacles made a deep impression on me. These girls are redefining norms and proving that change is possible,” confides Khady, moved.

She also remembers the day she helped a partner organization secure funding for an ambitious project close to the community's heart. This success, which she thought was out of reach, marked a defining moment in her motivation, reinforcing her conviction that, sometimes, it all starts with a simple gesture of trust.

An inspiring philosophy of life

Khady is not just a changemaker; she is also an inspiration to those around her. Passionate about cooking, curious and positive, she sees every challenge as an opportunity. “My laughter is my signature,” she says with a laugh. “I want people around me to feel light and able to move mountains.”

When she talks about one of her great inspirations, Nelson Mandela, you can sense the quiet strength within her. “His resilience, despite the hardships, is a model for me,” she shares.

A vision for the future

For Khady, volunteering is much more than a commitment; it's an invitation to dream of a better world. “I dream of a future where female genital mutilation is eradicated, where children have access to healthcare and where women, the true pillars of families, have the means to empower themselves.”

To those who are still hesitant to get involved, she makes a vibrant appeal: “Volunteering has enabled me to learn as much as to give. It's an experience that transforms you and gives deep meaning to life. I'd do it again as often as necessary.”

With Khady Diallo, the world seems a little brighter, buoyed by the laughter of a sun that has not finished shining.
