Strengthening community resilience to climate change with the Koridò Vèt project in Haiti

Haiti

In the Baradères-Cayemites protected area, in southwestern Haiti, communities are living through prolonged droughts and repeated floods. In the face of these climate disruptions that threaten ecosystems and living conditions, a major initiative is underway: the Koridò Vèt project, implemented by the CECI and Viridis Terra International (VTI), in collaboration with committed local actors and supported by Global Affairs Canada.

The Koridò Vèt project aims to strengthen the adaptive capacity of more than 4,500 people directly and 60,500 indirectly—including at least 40% women and girls—through nature-based solutions and the promotion of women's leadership. In Haiti, women—often on the frontlines of the climate crisis—play a vital role in preserving natural resources, ensuring food security, and sustaining the social fabric. That’s why the project actively supports their participation in community, economic, and decision-making spaces.

The project is being carried out in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment (MDE), the National Protected Areas Agency (ANAP), as well as local organizations such as ACDIB (Concerted Actions for the Integrated Development of Bardères) and two women’s federations active in the area: KOFAGA (Konbit Fanm GrandAns) and FAC-Sud (Femmes en Action – Sud). Together, these partners will work to restore degraded ecosystems, support women-led microenterprises, and improve access to sustainable resources for the entire community.

Faced with the climate emergency, building women’s capacities and recognizing their knowledge is a key path toward sustainable and inclusive solutions. By investing in women's leadership, the wealth of local ecosystems, and community mobilization, the Koridò Vèt project paves the way for resilience rooted in collective action.
