Niger: validation of the NDC 3.0, a key step for climate action

Niger

In Niamey, on May 19 and 20, 2026, a national workshop brought together public institutions, technical partners, civil society organizations and youth movements to validate Niger’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0). This document will guide the country’s climate action for the 2025–2035 period.

Faced with growing climate challenges, including droughts, floods and the degradation of natural resources, this new roadmap aims to strengthen both greenhouse gas emission reductions and the resilience of communities.

A participatory process rooted in national priorities

The validation workshop mobilized a broad range of actors, including sectoral ministries, technical institutions, civil society organizations, as well as several international partners such as CECI, UNEP, GIZ, UNICEF and other organizations engaged in supporting climate policies.

This process helped integrate key priorities such as water security, food systems, energy, natural resource management and the strengthening of institutional frameworks. It also placed strong emphasis on social inclusion, particularly youth participation and governance issues.

A first contribution from CECI to this momentum

CECI contributed to this process alongside national actors and technical partners, supporting the discussions and reflections that led to the validation of the NDC 3.0. This contribution is part of the RÉELS project, implemented by CECI and its partners in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, with financial support from Global Affairs Canada.

This participation marks an important milestone for CECI. It is the first time CECI has been involved in a national process of this scale in Niger. It reflects CECI’s commitment to supporting collective initiatives led by institutions and communities, and to contributing to strengthened capacities for climate change adaptation.
