The Matriarchs of the Forest: ancestral knowledge for the protection of nature
CECI, in collaboration with the Bolivian organization APCOB (Apoyo Para el Campesino indígena del Oriente Boliviano), will present in Montreal and at COP-30 in Brazil the international exhibition “The Matriarchs of the Forest”, originally created in Bolivia.
Through portraits and intimate stories, the exhibition highlights the role of Indigenous elder women from the Chiquitanía region, guardians of ancestral knowledge related to the protection of nature and the transmission of intergenerational wisdom.
For its presentation in Canada, we wish to expand this initiative by also including photos of Indigenous elder women from Canada. The goal is to create a space of resonance between Indigenous realities from the South and the North, while valuing the transmission of knowledge and the deep bonds between women and nature.
The selected photos will be part of a public exhibition to be presented across Canada at the end of fall 2025. They will serve to raise public awareness of Indigenous struggles and to promote the recognition of Indigenous knowledge as a key source of solutions to the climate crisis.
The photos will be used exclusively for this purpose (exhibition and related communication), with no commercial intent. A process of informed consent will be implemented, including a release form to be signed before any photos are displayed.
If you would like to contribute to this initiative, please write to us by September 28, 2025 at TarikM@ceci.ca.
