Countless studies show that if we do not act now to fight against climate change, the consequences for the planet and for future generations will be irreversible.
For decades now, we have already been witnessing an increase in the occurrence and intensity of natural disasters around the world. In Canada, floods, forest fires, storms and deadly heat waves occur regularly, directly affecting the population. In countries of the Global South, where the economy is largely dependent on agriculture and where
infrastructure and basic services are often lacking, the effects of climate change are all the more devastating. With droughts, floods and other extreme weather events, agricultural yields are declining, leading to higher food prices and increased food insecurity for the most vulnerable. Difficult access to nutritious food and clean water is causing multiple malnutrition problems around the world and forcing people to flee their lands in search of better living conditions.
For several years now, CECI has been working to bring solutions in sustainable development and adaptation to climate change for the most vulnerable populations on the
planet. We place particular emphasis on women’s empowerment to achieve sustainable results in the fight against climate change. In the countries we work in, because of gender based discrimination, women and girls are particularly at risk.
Whether in Haiti, Guatemala, Nepal or the Philippines, we aim to build the capacity of local communities and authorities to cope with natural disasters and their resulting economic shocks, especially for the most marginalized people. In particular, we are strengthening the capacity of farmers to adopt innovative farming practices that respect the environment and are better adapted to climate risks. We are also working in the areas of waste management and the restoration of degraded ecosystems. Another part of our work focuses on raising awareness among local populations and stakeholders on the issues related to climate change.
