Mamadou Ndiaye\u003C\u002Fstrong>\n\nIf I have to resume my cultural experience in Senegal, it will be concentrated in particularly one person: Mr. Mamadou Ndiaye, the coordinator of the organisation where the Uniterra program sent me this year: the AUMN, Association of Horticulturalists of the Niayes.\nWriting this article will be a little difficult: I have his authorisation, but he has to read it and approve everything before I can publish it!\nSince I started working here, he takes time from his busy schedule to talk to me without time limits, and about so many subjects.\nThe first day that we meet, he remarked that I was a very smiley person. I was very happy to be here after dreaming to work in Africa all my adult life! For sure I was smiling!! The same day he told me that he had a Polygamous family, without giving too much personal information, but opening the dialogue to all the cultural differences that we have. And he knows it very well, having travelled many times to Europe, India, Brazil... he is very well aware of how people see the world differently. He even explained that the sense of humour can be different!\nMr.Niayes is from a Bambara (an ethnic group from Mali) village near Thies, Senegal he speaks many languages, including a perfect French. He worked in the Agriculture area for many decades (we don’t really know his age, it is not registered in the documents, as is the case of many Senegalese), he did research for the National Center of Research in Agriculture (CNRA) Bambey in the Senegalese Institute of Research in Agriculture ISRA, and used to travel by motorbike all over the country. He also participated in many international conferences as a lecturer and assistant. He is himself an agriculturalist and animal farmer. The association is a long-time partner of CECI, they have had many volunteers in a variety of areas: communications, organisation, marketing, etc. and I am the third one working in the Environmental Management Plan. The first one did a diagnostic, the second wrote the plan, and I am here to implement as much points as possible (the main points are reforestation, waste management, energy economy, water conservation, implementing ecological agriculture, and valorizing products).\nOnce he told me (and I really hope he was joking) that I was the worst volunteer he worked with: I was all over the place, I wanted to be in the country side all the time, I wanted to meet other organisations that work in Thies, I asked too many questions, …mostly…I wanted to move a lot! And even worse...I couldn’t write French perfectly! But at the same time, he told me I was one of the nicest ones (and I hope he was not joking this time!) doing a lot of the cleaning and arranging the office, adapting very well to culture, and working very hard! He is not easy to please! In 8 months, only once he told me that I did a good job: it was when I presented a document I wrote, the Environmental Policy of the AUMN in an Administration Council. Every document that we had to write will be meticulously analyzed…word by word… not a good idea to present him something near departure time!\nWe travel together to visit a few of the 17 Unions that are part of the AUMN, he invited me to conferences and meetings as soon as the subject may be related to the environment. He integrates me in the day to day activities. We had lunch together many times, in restaurants or his house…every time he tells me that I should get married, and why family is so important. He tells me that I am free as the wind, he thinks it is too much! Many times, I can complain about any random thing…he will say that the reason is that I am not married!\nWe also talk about religion, I told him that nature is my most sacred thing, he says that many Muslim people can feel the same, one thing does not exclude the other in his eyes. And he always greets me in Wolof, and tells me that I should speak better by now!\nHe can be very critical of my writings, but always makes interesting suggestions to make it better. He clearly wants me to be concentrated in my mandate, and everything I do, should have a positive impact for our association. A little bit different as experience as my last year in Guatemala, where I was encouraged to work with all the groups of the area. In ProAtitlan, the objective was to increase awareness about waste management, so, all the publics where a target!\nHe is a great leader, everybody respects him, his knowledge and experience is well known among all actors! Mamadou Ndiaye\u003C\u002Fstrong>\n\nSi je dois résumer mon expérience culturelle au Sénégal, il sera concentré en particulier sur une personne: M. Mamadou Ndiaye, coordinateur de l'organisation où le programme Uniterra m'a envoyée cette année: l'AUMN, Association des unions maraîchères des Niayes.\nL'écriture de cet article sera un peu difficile: j'ai son autorisation, mais il doit le lire et tout approuver avant de pouvoir le publier!\nDepuis que j'ai commencé à travailler ici, il prend le temps de son horaire chargé pour me parler sans limites de temps et à propos de tant de sujets.\nLe premier jour que nous nous sommes rencontrés, il a remarqué que j'étais très souriante. J'ai été très heureuse d'être là après avoir rêvé de travailler en Afrique toute ma vie d’adulte! Bien sûr, je souriais !! Le même jour, il m'a dit qu'il avait une famille polygame, sans donner trop d'informations personnelles, mais en ouvrant le dialogue à toutes les différences culturelles que nous avons. Et il le sait très bien, ayant voyagé plusieurs fois en Europe, en Inde, au Brésil ... il est très conscient de la façon dont les gens voient le monde différemment. Il a même expliqué que le sens de l'humour peut être différent!\nM. Ndiaye vient du village de Tatene Bambara (les Bambara sont une ethnie de Mali) près de Thiès, Sénégal, il parle plusieurs langues, y compris le français parfait. Il a travaillé au Centre National de Recherches Agricole (CNRA) Bambey à l'institut Sénégalais de Recherche Agricole (ISRA) pendant de nombreuses années (nous ne connaissons pas vraiment son âge, il n'est pas enregistré dans les documents, comme c'est le cas pour beaucoup de Sénégalais). Il a voyagé en moto dans tout le pays. Il a également participé à de nombreuses conférences internationales en tant que conférencier et assistant. Il est lui-même agriculteur et éleveur. Il est ouvert aux techniques écologiques, mais il met au-dessus de tous les intérêts économiques des agriculteurs puisque il est bien conscient qu'ils n'ont que leurs cultures comme seule sources de revenu.\nM. Il veut clairement que je sois concentrée dans mon mandat, et tout ce que je fais, devrait avoir un impact positif pour l'AUMN. El mismo día me contó que tenía una familia polígama, sin dar demasiada información personal, pero abriendo el diálogo a todas las diferencias culturales que tenemos. Y lo sabe muy bien, después de haber viajado muchas veces a Europa, India, Brasil... él es muy consciente de cómo la gente ve el mundo de manera diferente. Incluso me explicó que el sentido del humor puede ser distinto.\nEl Sr. Ndiaye es de una aldea Bambara (una etnia de Malí) cerca de Thies, Senegal y habla muchos idiomas, incluyendo un francés perfecto. Trabajó en el área de Agricultura durante décadas (no sabemos realmente su edad, no está registrado en los documentos, como es el caso de muchos senegaleses), fue investigador para el Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Agrícolas (CNRA) Bambey en el Instituto Senegalés de Investigación Agrícola (ISRA), y solía viajar en moto por todo el país. También participó en muchos encuentros internacionales como conferenciante y asistente. Él mismo es agricultor y ganadero. El primero hizo un diagnóstico, el segundo escribió el plan, y yo estoy aquí para implementar tantos puntos como sea posible (los principales son la reforestación, la gestión de residuos, la conservación del agua, la economía de la energía, la implementación de la agricultura ecológica y la valorización de los productos).\nUna vez me dijo (y realmente espero que estuviera bromeando) que yo era la peor voluntaria con la que trabajó: yo quería hacer demasiadas cosas, quería estar en el campo todo el tiempo, quería conocer otras organizaciones que trabajan en Thies, hacía demasiadas preguntas... sobre todo... ¡quería moverme mucho! Y aún peor... ¡No podía escribir en francés perfectamente! Pero al mismo tiempo, me dijo que era una de las mejores (y espero que no estaba bromeando esta vez): yo hacía mucha limpieza y organización de la oficina, me adaptaba muy bien a la cultura, y trabajaba muy duro! ¡Él no es fácil de complacer! En 8 meses, sólo una vez me dijo que hice un buen trabajo: fue cuando presenté un documento que escribí, la Política Ambiental de la AUMN en una reunión del Consejo de Administración. Cada documento que tuvimos que escribir es meticulosamente analizado... palabra por palabra... no es una buena idea presentarle algo cerca de la hora de salida.\nViajamos juntos a visitar algunas de las 17 Uniones que forman parte de la AUMN, me invitó a conferencias y encuentros tan pronto como el tema pudiera estar relacionado con el ambiente. Me integra en las actividades cotidianas. Almorzamos juntos muchas veces, en restaurantes o en su casa y cada vez me dice que debo casarme, y por qué la familia es tan importante. Me dice que soy libre como el viento, él piensa que es demasiado! Muchas veces, puedo quejarme de cualquier cosa al azar... él dirá que la razón es que no estoy casada!\nTambién hablamos de religión, le dije que la naturaleza es lo más sagrado para mi, él opina que muchos musulmanes pueden sentir lo mismo, una cosa no excluye la otra a sus ojos. Y él siempre me saluda en Wolof, y remarca que ya debería hablar mejor.\nPuede ser muy crítico con mis escritos, pero siempre hace sugerencias interesantes para hacerlo mejor. Él claramente quiere que me concentre en mi mandato, y todo lo que hago debería tener un impacto positivo para nuestra asociación.
