increased in Burkina Faso. Refusing to witness the collapse of a national economic activity, the disappearance of the ancestral practice of rice parboiling, and the decline of paddy rice (with greater nutritional qualities), hundreds of Burkinabé women bought unsold rice productions from local cooperatives.\u003Cbr \u002F>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>These women then began parboiling it and selling it in local markets. Supported by an initial CECI project carried out from 2009 to 2014, more than a thousand parboilers were able to organize into professional associations. The impact of this first project on working conditions, job creation, food security, quality, and hygiene standards was such that the Ministry of Agriculture of Burkina Faso wanted to see the experience extended. effectively meet market quality expectations. The artisanal approach is gradually giving way to a more efficient and entrepreneurial approach. The construction of infrastructure, purchase of suitable equipment, and training in improved parboiling techniques have significantly improved the quality of the rice produced, notably reducing the number of black grains and the levels of impurities and breakage.  Moreover, there is an expansion of market opportunities with the establishment of new partnerships, both private and institutional.  Professionalization and Strengthening of Organizational and Entrepreneurial Capacities of Parboilers  Changes in the conduct of activities within the unions have been made. In addition to developing a strategic vision, skills have increased at various levels, particularly regarding governance (increased accountability of leaders, more transparent information circulation). Improvements are also visible in management (greater rigor allowing the production of financial statements) and entrepreneurship (acquisition of knowledge favoring market profitability analysis).  Better organized and more entrepreneurial, UNERIZ and its member unions are also better able to offer quality services to their members, particularly in terms of access to financing. Access to loans and credit has been expanded. In partnership with a financial institution, a Credit Access Facilitation Fund (FFAC) for rice parboilers in parboiling centers was created.  Finally, UNERIZ project and the unions offer parboilers various training sessions aimed at strengthening their technical and managerial capacities (administrative management, literacy courses, etc.).  Consolidation of Women's Status as Parboilers  Each intervention carried out under PAERIZ was conducted with a gender equality approach, creating an environment conducive to the professional development of parboilers. In addition to a greater presence of women in various bodies, there is more regular speaking by parboilers within their unions and increased visibility and representation of parboilers and unions within their communities. Additionally, access to and control over several resources have improved, particularly access to financing, equipment, and markets.  Ret0JcAJTFM   Countering the Collapse of a National and Traditional Economic Activity When Women Reclaim Rice Parboiling  At the turn of the 2000s, following the privatization of the rice sector, white rice imports increased in Burkina Faso. Refusing to witness the collapse of a national economic activity, the disappearance of the ancestral practice of rice parboiling, and the decline of paddy rice (with greater nutritional qualities), hundreds of Burkinabé women bought unsold rice productions from local cooperatives.  These women then began parboiling it and selling it in local markets. Supported by an initial CECI project carried out from 2009 to 2014, more than a thousand parboilers were able to organize into professional associations. The impact of this first project on working conditions, job creation, food security, quality, and hygiene standards was such that the Ministry of Agriculture of Burkina Faso wanted to see the experience extended. PAERIZ thus came to strengthen the capacities of parboilers.  Results that matter  14%  increase in the amount of rice marketed by the 5 unions between 2016 and September 2017  31  women trained in parboiling techniques  45%  increase in the total amount of credits granted by financial institutions to the 5 unions between 2014 and 2017  96  people trained in gender equality  1  agreement with the Ministry of National Education and Literacy for the supply of parboiled rice in the country's school canteens  Our partners  Thank you to our financial and implementation partners, without whom this project would not be possible.
